I would have thought that a formerly paid coder would have had an external hard drive back up of important stuff and not have left it on a PC like a n00b?

Pretty sure you claimed to have done this with the really old site that had Curm's posts on it?

Anyway, can't post using a VPN or using duck duck go browser. What happened? You finally sell out to Google or something?

How did you manage to keep all the old smilies intact and in the old custom order BTW?

Seems suss, as the kids these days say.

I would have thought that a formerly paid coder would have had an external hard drive back up of important stuff and not have left it on a PC like a n00b?

Well, I do have pneumonia for months now and my brain just ain't what it used to be. I did back it up on zip drives and lost them in the move. Plus my old computer just went to shit at a crucial moment.

Anyways, I'm re-writing the code from scratch, now that we have a dedicated server, I can put back lots of stuff that we couldn't use because it was on a shared host. At least, when my brain comes back. Maybe.

No idea, but I'll check it out. The nice young men who "built" the server kept asking me to have my "developer" call them.

Smileys are easy... just one directory of image files. The forum was something else. Since the old host restricted my database access, I had to make flat files to store the text in the posts. Other flat files kept arrays of threads and replies. It ended up being hundreds of thousands of files. Plus, the database-update-array files ended up being too large to download. I could only do 2 or 3 at a time, and that was just too fucking much.

It was easy to download the code, and I still have that. But it was for generating flat files, which is damned slow. Now that we have full access to the database again, I am trying to remember the code I wrote 25 years ago. Now that is the REAL pain in the ass.

I had given up coffee, but had to re-acquire the caffein addiction so I could code at pre-old-woman levels.

Still working on bringing back stuff. But I spent a few days in the hospital with a family member and had to sleep for about 48 hours just to be able to get up and walk around.

Lol. Yep, that's a tough one. Did that myself recently due to ill health and old age and it's hard. Getting up in the morning without caffeine is certainly tough, as is concentrating without caffeine or nicotine.

As for external hard drives being too expensive, that's a crock of shit.You could pick up 32gb ones for less than a sandwich and cup of coffee and seeing as how the entire site download for Wikipedia is less than 24gb, I'm confident you could have easily had it backed up if you really wanted to.

But hey, never let the truth get in the way of a good begathon.

Best of luck to ya, I've donated in the past but your treatment of Leela and coddling of the anus was diabolical and means I would never donate again, even if the site was entertaining which it hasn't been for years. I'm sure some sap will cough up tho. Maybe ask anus or M7 or the Aussie cringebot?
