If I was able to I would post this video by Randall Carlson about the mysterious origins of Halloween from a geologists point of view.

Happy All Hallows eve to you too Elaine.

I have to go put my costume now. I'm going to be a Rastafarian Batman.

RE: Happy Halloween!

Wiccans observe Samhain (pronounced sow-in). If I remember correctly is is a fairly ancient Gaelic festival for the start of winter after the last harvest.

Wiccans believe that "The Veil", meaning the separation of this Earth and the world of the spirits, is thin at this time. As a result, it's supposed to be easier to communicate with your ancestors or ghosts.

The other time of year when "the veil is thin" is Beltane, which is about 6 months later.

Souls supposedly "enter" here during Beltane and wait around 'til they are born. When people die, their souls hang around until Samhain, whereupon they go off to the spirit world.

The voudun religions have some version of Papa Legba, who is the one who opens and closes the door to the spirit world when people are born or die.

And, of course, here in the Americas we have el Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, on November 1st.

I took a lot of this with a grain of salt, so to speak. To me the "door" between life and death is never closed.

To me, ghosts hang around when they want to. In the years since curmy died, I have felt him grab my ass in the middle of the night many times. It always makes me wake up laughing.

So I celebrate Halloween/Samhain and think fondly of the people who have died, and celebrate their lives. Happy Halloween!

RE: Happy Halloween!

I remember one time when I was in New Orleans. There are always people on the street playing music or casting "stones", meaning runes, or offering to do a "reading" for you with a tarot deck.

One woman with a French accent approached me and offered to cast runes for me. So I sat down with my knees crossed and she insisted that my legs and arms NOT be crossed or it would interfere with her calling the Loi (or lwa in Haitian creole). (spirits)

So I uncrossed my legs and told her, "Les Mystères sont toujours ici." (The Gods are always here.) She was surprised, and laughed. Then she did a reading ... something about me and my husband being together for many lives. I paid her twenty bucks and thanked her.

NOLA is such a fun city. Curmy and I were married there.
